This Mac holds the only copy of your claim history. A backup copies the database and every attached document into a folder in your home directory — kept out of Desktop and Documents so it is never synced to iCloud.

Backups stay encrypted, so a copy on an external drive is safe — and equally unreadable if every password is lost.
